Week thirty 2009

Happy Birthday, Anna! Theme: On the Go…. Focus: Trucks, Trains, Ships, Boats & Subs Classical composer: Bach (As you may have noticed, we have been revieiwing some of our favorite composers and music from the fall.) . Spanish: el camión (truck), el tren (train) . Theme: Beep-beep, chugga-chugga, toot-toot! What fun we had this week learning more about things that go. The children created an adorable dump truck with working tilt by coloring the truck, some drawing a driver and helping the teacher to pin the tilting back to the truck. We spent some time talking about different kinds of trucks and their purposes and even what came before trucks such as wagons and handcarts. Each child chose a cut-out shape and decorated it using very cool media, such as small tubes, foam wheels, and much more.We played a transportation-themed round of "When you hear the morning-bell" using our imaginations and learning characteristics of different modes of transportation. At the beginning of the game, most of the children were just running around when it was time to wake up, but they soon became recognizable sailboats, planes, hot-air balloons, etc. We ended our week with a bit hit--balloon “motor” boats--and used the plastic pools as small lakes to watch them go! . . . . . . . . . . . . Table Activities: Slates and chalk, Marble mats and tongs, Counting and sorting boxes . Art: The children explored the colors of the rainbow and how to use the “primary” colors to make “secondary” colors. They used tempera paint to color strips with the six colors of the rainbow. These will be put together during a future art class and used as a backdrop for another project. The children have had a lot of exposure to colors and color mixing, so quiz them at home and see if they know which colors make orange, green and purple. Activity Songs: “Old Brass Wagon”, “Choo-Choo Train”, “My Blue Sailboat” by Laurie Berkner, “Catch that Train” by Dan Zanes . Math, Handwriting and Reading: This week we added the /ch/ sound as in “chick” to the sound train. For reading/handwriting groups, one group practiced matching the consonant sounds with a picture that started with that sound (C---Cat). We played a memory game to correctly match them. The other group reviewed the sentences we wrote as a class and wrote their very own sentence or sentences on lined paper. They were very proud of themselves! For math one group used our giant number cubes to make and identify numbers in the tens and hundreds. The other group took turns rolling the cubes and identifying the numbers in the ones and teens. Then we played a game where we did different actions the number of times we rolled. . Storybooks: Little Blue Truck, A Train Goes Clickety-Clack, Let’s Go, Sail Away, Little Bear’s Little Boat, Rub-A-Dub Sub, Jamberry, My Subway Ride, Silly Sally . Free-Play Fun: Tracks, big and little cars, trains, music, wooden blocks, reading loft/fort, outside play...As a special treat, just before lunch on Tuesday (truck day) there happened to be a truck outside working in the empty lot. The children enjoyed looking at the digger being unloaded from a big flat-bed truck and working to dig some dirt. Perfect timing!
